Snow Geese, Still Air & Second Chances — Beaupré to Île d’Orléans

There are hunts you remember for the numbers, and then there are hunts you remember for everything else. This one had both—but it didn’t start that way.

We kicked things off near Saint-Joachim, at Club ChassOie, guided by our trusted crew at LaCache Outfitters. Six of us, shoulder to shoulder in one of the finest blinds we’ve ever hunted. The kind of place where everything feels dialed.

But hunting has a way of reminding you who’s really in control.

Day 1 — Too Good to Be Good

The weather couldn’t have looked better on paper. Warm sun, blue skies, and not a breath of wind.

And that was the problem.

We settled into the blind and before long, the hunt slowed into something quieter. Conversation took over. Stories, laughs, catching up like we hadn’t in years. For a moment, it felt like we weren’t even hunting—just six friends sharing time in a place that deserved it.

Out front, over a thousand snow geese sat comfortably in the water, no more than 60 yards away. Close enough to watch, close enough to know they had no intention of moving.

We didn’t fire a shot.

We were skunked.

And still, it didn’t feel like a loss.

Day 2 — Trust the Guides

Good outfitters don’t chase birds—they stay ahead of them.

The team at LaCache Outfitters made the call to move locations. New field. New setup. They had scouted the day before and saw exactly where the birds wanted to be.

We packed up and headed toward Île d’Orléans.

2:00 AM came early.

By 3:30, we were in the field. Headlamps cutting through the dark, decoys going out by feel, not sight. Two hours of setup, hands moving on instinct, everyone knowing their role.

By 6:30—first legal light—we were ready.

When It Turns

The first flock didn’t hesitate.

They came in committed—wings locked, feet down, right into the spread.

After a silent first day, that first shot hits different. It’s relief. It’s validation. It’s why you wake up at 2:00 AM and do it all again.

We stayed on them through the morning and finished with 31 snow geese—just over five birds per hunter. Not a limit shoot, but a hard-earned day that meant more because of how it started.

Respect the Harvest

Every bird counts.

We processed everything—breasts, legs, necks, hearts, and livers. Nothing wasted. The feet, cleaned and set aside, make for an excellent natural treat for the dogs that work alongside us.

That’s part of the responsibility. Not just to hunt, but to use what you take.

Field-Tested Gear

This trip gave us the chance to run our gear the way it’s meant to be used—in real conditions.

No controlled environment. Just mud, water, and early mornings.

Final Thoughts

Day one reminded us that hunting doesn’t owe you anything. Day two proved that experience, quick decisions, and adaptability still matter.

Big thanks to LaCache Outfitters for making the right call when it counted.
